THE CREATION STORY....As Told By The Cat

On the first day of creation, God created the cat.
On the second day, God created man to serve the cat.
On the third, God created all the animals of the earth to serve as potential food for the cat.
On the fourth day, God created honest toil so that man could labor for the good of the cat.
On the fifth day, God created the sparkle ball so that the cat might or might not play with it.
On the sixth day, God created veterinary science to keep the cat healthy and the man broke.
On the seventh day, God tried to rest, but he had to scoop the litterbox.

Open Letter to my Very Best Friend and Mom to My God'sDaughter [Mar. 16th, 2008|05:44 am]
[Tags|]
[Current Location |some IP address]
[mood |Up too damn early]

Good morning!

I came over last night for conversation, dinner and to spend time with Kaia. Over the course of the evening you made several comments that struck me as, if nothing else, widely at variance, with how I your household and How Good A Mom You Are. I want to demolish these comments as unworthy, in MythBusters fashion, with reason, logic, sound design and a bit of duct tape and PVC pipe.

Myth 1: (all quotes approximate) "My home os a shambles and I accomplished nothing all day." Your house was certainly a bit cluttered, but it's a long ways from having the Health Department called on your head. A bit of clutter is not something for which a mom and homemaker should be branded on the forehead. It's really a mark that you have your priorities in order. There are a galaxy of things that can take priority, like Mommy's Sanity. Nothing -- except meals and the youngling's physical safety -- takes priority over bolstering your SAN checks. It's OK. Really. You did things to make sure you stayed on top of the job of parenting a three uear old.

Myth BUSTED!

Myth 2: (by implication, not a quote): "I did not actively parent Kaia today." OK, so you let K outside in the back yard today with her play tea-things. You did not lock her out of the house so you could watch soap operas and eat vegan Bob-bons. You were physically present every moment, right? She wanted to be outside, she wasn't sent there as a punishment, right? I hate to break the news to you, friend, but you are anything but a neglectful bad Mom. You are a Damn Good Mommy, because the Kaia I see when I am there -- even when she is not in Perfect Little Princess Mode -- is a child who gets ample good food to eat, plenty of exercise, frequent trips to socialize at play-group, is kind, respectful, smart and imaginative. You've done this by putting her needs first and not taking the easy approach. That was the one my parents took with me, assuming that children are wild animals or savages that must have civilization beaten into them and that the Hammer must hover over their heads like the thread-supported sword of Greek legend poised to fall at anytime to keep them in iine . . . you know, the Tarkin Doctrine approach to parenting. One that has kept psychiatrists knee deep in self-esteem issues and showered lucre upon psych drug makers.
Amd, about that not reading but: That's what God'sparents and Daddy are for. If you don't want your child to raze your village, it takes your village to raise your child. My parents never, and I mean EVER -- read me a bedtime story. The "good" TV shows started an hour after our bedtime back then.

Myth is BUSTED!

Love, RichO

Why the iTunes Store Free Song of the Week RAWKS [Mar. 25th, 2007|10:47 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[music |Bat out of Hell, Meat Loaf]

Two GREAT songs I snagged in iTS Downloads of the Week, both songs I've heard while shopping for groceries with Iz.

One, James Blunt's "High" I've already mentioned in this space.

The other one, I just realized I had in my iTunes library.

Dinner went really well from a WW point of view. Had to substitute Teriyaki sauce for soy on my BBQ, and I had an extra egg roll...However, that's what the weekly points allowance is for.

And, as always when Iz and I have dinner, I had a good time. Seeing Iz does good things for me; today was damn near perfect.

I kept Iz out too late to do her nightly swim, having picked her up right from work.  Bad Rich! Bad, Bad Rich!

However, she bought me the first book in the Dresden Files "magical detective" series. Thank you, Ms. Awesome!

[mood |Pretty good!]
[music |my "good mood" playlist]

Components of a good mood:

0. A day off after a good day's work.

2. Good tunage on "Doomslayer XP SP2", my iPod: The Elders, [info]filkertom, [info]cadhla, Emerald Rose, Heather Alexander, Meat Loaf, Escape Key. Boston, and a bit more.
3. A 3-point uber-bagel of whole wheat wholesomeness with fat-free cream cheese flying in perfect formation
4. Sunshine, blue skies, singing birds.
5. Making a plan, executing it, and expecting affirmative results from executing that plan.
6. Physically feeling a LOT better.
7. Garden burgers with [info]catnip and [info]fionn320 last night.
8. Mongolian BBQ tonight.
9. Some time to play WoW

Robot's Rules of Order x-post [Mar. 11th, 2007|10:16 am]
[Tags|]
[mood | thoughtful]

Crossposted from Operation Mindfsck

Amiov's 3 Laws of Robotics may become law in South Korea:

For the Asimov-impaired, the Three Laws appear here.

The most interesating excerpts here:

... The South Koreans are not the only people working on such a code, but others are independent efforts by scientists themselves uneasy at the implications of their work....

This I like; scientists concerned over the social and political dimentions of science. We need more of that.

...The initial findings of one such group, the European Robotics Research Network (Euron) were unveiled last summer, and went as far as raising the question of the ethics of robot sexuality, and whether sex-toy robots should be developed....

And there you have it, straight from the Too-Much-Information Superhighway. Glad to see someone's thinking about the ethics of robot sex toys. This meme adds a whole new meaning to the phrase "hardware upgrade," doesn't it?

How about robotic celebs? They cannot be any more obnoxious that BenKat, Tommifer, K-Fed and the evil that is Brittney. Oops, Hollywood's already done that one
I could go on, but why?

Good tunes! [Feb. 25th, 2007|10:16 pm]
[music |1849 // The Best Crowd We Ever Had by The Elders]

I heard this on a friend's iTunes today, and I *had* to get it.
The rest of the album is equally awesome

1849
The Elders
www.theeldersmuisc.com

They travelled across the angry sea in 1849
with all they could carry, they travelled sick, they travelled blind
The homes of starving Ireland just before the wintertime
They buried their dead at sea in winter 1849

The captain was a sailing man respected in his time
He made the journey twice before and almost lost his life
The hardest part was choosing who would sail and who would die
Stranded with the hunger of 1849

Chorus:
They left behind the clans that had been together a thousand years
music and the memories a-ringing in their ears
They brought with them tradition and the will to work and die
in a land known for freedom, soil and sky

Memories of their loved ones who were swallowed by the sea
Handed down from father to son along with the rosary
One black bead for every soul forever lost in time
who didn't hear the new years bell of 1849

They left behind the clans that had been together a thousand years
music and the memories a-ringing in their ears
They brought with them tradition and the will to work and die
in a land known for freedom, soil and sky

His name was patrick mulligan, his eyes were steely blue
He lost his wife to famine and his youngest son too
I know they'll be united in the Lord's good time
And view this riven family of 1849

They left behind the clans that had been together a thousand years
music and the memories a-ringing in their ears
They brought with them tradition and the will to work and die
in a land known for freedom, soil and sky

Recipe: Strange Days Tacos [Jan. 1st, 2007|06:58 pm]
[mood | content]
[music |Fire On High // Face the Music by Electric Light Orchestra]

Inspired by my favorite New Years' movie and a total lack of the usual "taco" spices in my embryotic kitchen:

Ingredients:
1/4 lb lean ground beef or ground beef substitute, meatless or not (trying this with turkey later)
2 tsp Lea and Perrins' Wostershire sauce
1/2 cup uncooked brown rice
2 wheat tortillas 8" or larger
4 oz grated cheese (colby, cheddar, marbelled cheddar all OK)
1/2 chopped onion.

1. Brown hamburger on low heat, and drain
2. Add onion and Wostershire sauce,
2. Boil or steam brown rice, drain of necessary
4. Stir rice into the hamburger / onion / wos sauce mix, remove from heat
5. Spoon mix into tortillas, top with grated cheese

Serves several. Or, one, several servings. You choose.

Happy New Year!

Better now..."High" in fact...and more [Dec. 29th, 2006|05:23 pm]
[music |High // Back to Bedlam (Bonus Video Version) by James Blunt]

The Hellidays -- the hard part, at least -- is over. Legs hurt like hell, but better.

High-lights (pun always intended)
Daughter sent me a comic she made on her new Mac that is a slight departure from the annual dull xmas letter to family.

Talked to Mom, my brother and my daughter...and I did not once get the urge to scream. Yay me.

Heard this song -- one I downloaded as an iTunes freebie of the week a year ago -- while grocery shopping.

Ever get hit by lightning on hearing a song when you're with someone? Especially when the song is so dead-on about your feelings about someone specific? Tears in my eyes time...

http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/jamesblunt/high.html

And, to Pam and Bill, my deepest condolances for the loss of their daughter Lucy to the complications of premature birth on Christmas morning. May the Mother-of-All bring you peace at this terrible time and may Lucy's Return be swift.

BBs, all

No "saint" of mine . . .but still remembered. [Mar. 17th, 2006|11:27 am]
Today is one of those days where I just want to "go Crinos" (for you people who do not play Werewolf, that's the 'werewolf-as-killing-machine" form) and rip out throats. Wear green or get pinched (as they used to do in my elementary school), green beer (no amount of food coloring can make the horse piss that passes for amurikan "beer" taste like anything but equine whizz) and even those who are as Irish as I am Palestinian singing the auld songs and eating corned beef and cabbage.

All to celebrate a religious genocide who was not even Irish! All those faux Irishpeople really tick me off. I am not going to blame consumer culture for this; it's like blaming the river for the floodwaters.

Part of me wants to get all bitter about it and say: "I view Patrick in the same light that Native Americans view Chris Columbus." However satisfying it can be in the short term to play the victim that is not the path to growth.
Today I am wearing green, to honor the only people in the Celtic world who fell not under the domination of the Ceasers of Rome, but of Rome's Popes. Today I will drink not of a draught of green beer in a tavern to celebrate, but one of mead, to remember that Patrick the Briton, drove the DRUIDS out of Ireland with a foreign creed . . . and to remember all victims of religious persecution. Yes, all of them -- stoned, crucified, enslaved, shunned, put to the blade, burned, exiled or fed to wild beasts for sport -- Pagan and non. Every faith has its history of persecution, and every faith, when it is dominant, can be a persecutor. This is not about "ragging on the Xtians" -- it's about putting a stop to religious persecution.

It's just that Patrick's story and the timing for it just a few days before the Equinox, bring this to the fore for me.

As for the corned beef and cabbage . . . I'll pass on that this year.

My driver-side front tire, that is.

At least it went flat at the best possible time: on a Friday after my weekly bandage change and before work. AAA plus BigO Tires and I was on the road again in about 60 minutes.

This incident has convinced me beyond any doubt of the value of a cellphone and AAA membership. BTW, AAA's customer service rocks on toast.
